Christopher Williams from New York

Please note, this show is for mature audiences.

Christopher Williams of New York, a former Dance Forum featured artist, will return to the Wellspring stage with his dancers to perform the world premiere of The Portuguese Suite.

Choreographed by Mr. Williams, The Portuguese Suite is composed of nine dances, all related to medieval love spells or involving a particular herb or fruit believed by early herbalists to possess magical properties. Suite is danced to traditional fado (“fate”) songs, or songs about the human condition, including life, love and death. Fado was born from the half singing, half weeping laments of the wives of sailors who set sail and left them alone on the mainland for long periods of time.

Mr. Williams, a dancer, choreographer, puppeteer and performance artist, has toured with Rebecca Lazier and performed at the Judson Church in New York City with choreographer Douglas Dunn. His own work has been presented at the American College Dance Festival, at Danspace DraftWorks at St. Mark’s Church through Sarah Lawrence College, Food for Thought at Danspace Project and at Summer Stages Dance in Concord, Massachusetts. His striking choreography, immense charisma and incredible technique has prompted the New York Times to describe his as “…one ingenious guy…visionary imagination both conceptual and choreographic.”

Mr. Williams will bring with him his eight-member pick up company. Preferring to cast each new piece specifically rather than maintaining a set company, he carefully assembles a wide variety of brilliant performers that juxtapose many body types and span many ages in order to instill his work with an unusual corporeal counterpoint.
